SPECTRUM WORKPLACE. 50 YEARS OF DESIGNING SPACES THAT WORK.

As we celebrate fifty years in business, we are reminded that this milestone is about far more than time passed. It is about the people, relationships and decisions that have shaped Spectrum and the responsibility we have to carry that legacy.

At Spectrum Workplace, our story is one of thoughtful evolution, guided by a deep-rooted belief that workplaces are meant to nurture and empower the people within them, not just provide a space to work.

From our earliest days through to the multidisciplinary workplace strategy and design studio we are today, Spectrum has grown in tandem with the evolving world of work. Each chapter has been shaped by listening carefully to clients, responding thoughtfully to change, and remaining grounded in the values on which the business was founded.

FOUNDATIONS BUILT ON PEOPLE AND PURPOSE

Spectrum was founded by David Fidler on a simple yet powerful principle: workspaces should truly work for the staff using them. This belief has stood the test of time, even as the world of work has changed beyond recognition. Over the decades, we have witnessed dramatic shifts in technology, regulations, culture, and the way people work. Spectrum has evolved alongside these changes, guided not only by a practical understanding of business needs but also by a real, heartfelt interest in how people feel and thrive in their work environments. Our journey has always been about people first, and that continues to drive us forward.

What began as a specialist business has grown into a multidisciplinary firm offering workplace strategy, office interior design and project delivery services. The thread running through every stage of that growth has been a commitment to long-term relationships, considered design and delivery that prioritises quality and trust.

For more than 25 years, Director Jim Fidler has played a central role in guiding Spectrum through periods of growth, change, and reinvention. His leadership has balanced continuity with progression, ensuring the business continues to move forward without losing sight of what makes it distinctive.

Reflecting on the journey, Jim notes that the most significant changes have often come from outside the business itself.

“When I look back over the last 25 years, what stands out most isn’t just how much Spectrum has grown, but how dramatically the world of work has changed. We’ve seen shifts in how people collaborate, where work happens, and what employees expect from their workplace.

The key for us has always been listening. Listening to our clients, to our teams, and to what the wider market is telling us. My father built Spectrum on strong values and long-term relationships, and that foundation has allowed us to adapt without losing who we are. As we move into 2026, that approach remains just as important.”

This continuity of leadership has provided stability, while also creating space for new ideas, new services, and new ways of working to take shape.

A COLLABORATIVE, DESIGN LED APPROACH.

Today, Spectrum is shaped by a growing leadership team and a wider group of designers, project managers, and workplace consultants who bring a breadth of experience to every project. Collaboration is fundamental to how we work, both internally and with our clients.

Our approach begins with workplace strategy. We take time to explore how organisations operate, how their teams interact, and what their future ambitions look like and any challenges they are looking to overcome. From there, we develop interior design solutions that are informed, practical, and aligned with each client’s culture. Whether delivering a full relocation, a workplace transformation, or a refurbishment, our focus remains on creating workplace environments that support performance, well-being, and long-term flexibility.

As workplace expectations continue to evolve, our role increasingly extends beyond workplace design. Clients look to us as a partner, helping them navigate staff change, make informed decisions, and create spaces that remain relevant over time.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEXT 50 YEARS.

Marking 50 years is an opportunity to reflect, but it is also a moment to look forward. The workplace will continue to change, shaped by new technologies, activity based working models, and a growing emphasis on staff experience, sustainability, and inclusivity. Spectrum’s focus is on helping organisations respond to these shifts with clarity and confidence.

As we enter our next chapter, our commitment remains unchanged. We will continue to invest in our people, refine our expertise, and work closely with our clients to design workplaces that genuinely provide productive working environments for the staff who use them. Strong partnerships lead to workplaces that empower better ways of working.
