Spectrum delivered a workplace transformation for Checkatrade’s London HQ; a high-energy Cat B fit out for a leading digital business to enhance talent attraction and collaboration, while reinforcing brand identity and culture.
Rhys Fidler – Principal, Client Relation
From the initial client engagement, the project design strategy centred on creating a vibrant and engaging workplace that supports different ways of working across a fast-paced digital organisation. The layout was carefully planned to improve spatial flow and connectivity between teams, while introducing clearly defined zones for focused work, collaboration and social interaction. This approach enables employees to move seamlessly between tasks throughout the day, supporting productivity and engagement.
A key focus of the project was enhancing collaboration and employee experience. A central breakout and social hub was introduced as the heart of the office, providing a flexible space for informal meetings, team interaction and relaxation. This area plays a key role in fostering a strong workplace culture, encouraging communication across departments and supporting wellbeing in a high-performance environment.
Feature ceiling design and exposed services played a defining role in shaping the identity of the workplace. Sculpted ceiling elements were introduced throughout key areas to define zones, enhance spatial hierarchy and create moments of visual impact across the office. These are complemented by deliberately exposed mechanical and electrical services, reinforcing an industrial, authentic aesthetic that reflects the pace and transparency of a modern digital business. Integrated lighting within both the ceiling features and exposed soffits enhances depth, rhythm and atmosphere throughout the interior, contributing to a highly layered and dynamic environment.
The reception and arrival experience were also carefully considered to create a strong first impression for both staff and visitors. Designed as a showcase space, the entrance reflects Checkatrade’s bold brand identity and sets the tone for the rest of the workplace. Meeting rooms and client-facing areas were designed to provide a professional yet vibrant setting, supporting external engagement and reinforcing the organisation’s ambition and growth.
Internally, the workplace supports a range of working styles, from focused individual tasks to large-scale collaborative activity within open-plan team areas. The sales floor was designed as a high-performance environment, encouraging energy, communication and visibility across teams. This is complemented by quieter zones and meeting spaces that provide balance within the overall workplace ecosystem.
A bold and contemporary design language runs throughout the headquarters, reflecting Checkatrade’s confident brand identity. Strong use of colour, material contrast and graphic detailing creates a visually stimulating environment that energises the workspace while maintaining functionality. Durable, high-quality finishes were selected to support heavy daily use while ensuring the workplace retains a polished and professional appearance.
Lighting and environmental design were central to shaping the overall experience, with layered lighting strategies working in harmony with both feature ceilings and exposed services to support productivity and atmosphere. Work areas remain bright and task-focused, while social and breakout zones feel more relaxed and welcoming.
Delivered within a fast-paced programme, the project required close coordination and detailed planning to ensure timely completion and minimal disruption. Strong collaboration with the client team ensured the design intent was maintained throughout delivery, resulting in a smooth and efficient transformation process.
The completed headquarters now provides Checkatrade with a vibrant, future-ready workplace that supports high-performance working, strengthens collaboration and enhances employee wellbeing. It successfully reflects the organisation’s bold brand identity while providing a flexible and engaging environment that supports continued growth.
This project perfectly demonstrates how workplace transformation can be used as a strategic tool to attract talent, improve culture and reinforce brand identity within a fast-moving digital business. The result is a high-impact headquarters where feature architecture, exposed services and lighting design combine to create an energetic and immersive workplace experience.
