OSG Hindhead

Redesigning and project managing a full refurbishment of a 7,500 sqft learning centre as part of a broader campus modernisation programme.

The OSG Hindhead project involved the removal of larger classrooms to create an invigorating, open plan space interspersed with focus zones to encourage independent learning, collaboration and student wellbeing for both primary and secondary students.

From the outset, the ambition was to move away from traditional, compartmentalised educational spaces and instead create a more open, adaptable and engaging environment. The existing layout was carefully reviewed and reconfigured to improve spatial flow, connectivity and visibility across the building, enabling a more cohesive experience for staff and students. This approach supports a more flexible model of education, where teaching, collaboration and independent learning can operate seamlessly side by side.

The main focus of the transformation was enhancing collaboration and communication between teaching staff and students. New shared workspaces and breakout areas were introduced to encourage interaction, knowledge sharing and cross-disciplinary planning. These environments provide flexible settings for both structured teaching activities and informal collaboration, helping to strengthen professional relationships and improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of teaching delivery.

Student experience and staff wellbeing were central to the design approach. The environment was reimagined to provide a calm, supportive and inclusive setting that promotes focus, comfort and engagement throughout the day. A variety of spatial settings were incorporated, allowing users to choose environments that best suit their working or learning style, whether that be focused individual study, group collaboration or informal interaction.

A neutral and calming material palette was adopted throughout the scheme, reflecting the need to create an environment that is both non-distracting and conducive to learning. Soft tones, natural finishes and carefully considered textures were used to introduce warmth and balance, while maintaining a professional and timeless aesthetic. This approach ensures the environment remains adaptable for future change while providing a consistent sense of calm across all areas of the building.

Lighting design played an important role in shaping the atmosphere of the space, with a focus on maximising natural light where possible and introducing layered artificial lighting to support different functional zones. Brighter task-focused areas support learning and collaboration, while softer lighting in breakout and informal zones helps to create a more relaxed and welcoming environment.

The project also included the procurement of flexible furniture solutions, specifically selected to support a more independent and self-directed learning style. These adaptable furnishings allow students to quickly reconfigure their environment depending on task, enabling greater autonomy and encouraging a shift towards more personalised learning experiences. This flexibility further enhances the adaptability of the spaces and supports the organisation’s evolving educational philosophy.

The project was delivered during a scheduled holiday period, requiring a tightly managed programme and accelerated delivery approach to ensure completion within a constrained timeframe. Careful planning, sequencing and coordination were essential to achieving successful handover, with all works delivered under significant time pressure while maintaining quality, safety and design intent.

The design also considered flexibility and future-proofing, ensuring spaces can be reconfigured in response to changing educational needs and evolving teaching methods. This adaptability is particularly important for a global educational organisation that continues to grow and refine its approach to learning.

The completed environment now provides OneSchool Global with a modern, flexible and highly functional educational setting that supports teaching excellence and staff wellbeing. By creating a more collaborative, adaptable and student-centred environment, the project enhances communication, strengthens community and reflects the organisation’s commitment to innovative education.

Overall, this transformation demonstrates how thoughtful design, flexible furniture solutions and precise delivery can redefine traditional educational environments, creating spaces that are better aligned with modern teaching practices, improved wellbeing and the evolving needs of a global learning community.
